Umbrella Stands

Yamazaki Umbrella StandThere are apparently T-shirts you can get from Seattle that say “Rain Festival: Jan 1 – Dec 31.” I should get one, cut off the sleeves and wrap it round a pole and have my very own Vancouver flag. I’m not a big fan of most umbrella stands/buckets because they often don’t have a very modern design and if you have a smaller umbrella like I do, you end up getting your hand all wet when you are retrieving it. I saw these Yamazaki Umbrella Stands today at Room In Order and thought they were a perfect solution. They come in black or white and would neatly tuck into a corner in an entrance way.

How many sets of dinnerware do you really need?

Fine China

My parents are in the process of getting their kitchen painted. Seeing all their glassware and fine chinaware temporarily setting up residence in the living room made me wonder – in today’s society, which is no longer steeped in tradition, how many people still keep more than one set of dinnerware?

When I first moved out, I was dead set on buying two sets – one for everyday use and one for fancy occasions, simply because that is what my parents had. However, it wasn’t just my cupboard space limitation that stopped me. Thinking back to how much my parent’s extra sets were used over the years, I realized it was one tradition I was 100% willing to part with. Remember the episode in Friends with Monica’s plates?

Friends QuoteEven if you entertain a lot, I think it is better to buy one good quality set you really love that is dishwasher and microwave friendly (a must!) and actually use it. Everyday. After all, things are there to be used, not saved. Why keep more things that will just be a hassle to move and store? Make life easier for yourself. As for how many you should have in a set? I can’t help quoting from Sleepless in Seattle: “Ten. Eight is too few. Twelve is too many.”

Makeup Brush Storage

Makeup Brush Storage

I was perusing the Pinterest Home Organization boards one rainy evening (I am a neat freak) and I came across some ingenious ways to store makeup brushes. Chances are, you most likely do not get as excited about storage ideas as I do, but hopefully you will like this one.

I have a large collection of Bobbi Brown makeup brushes that I have acquired over the years and I was previously keeping them in one of these cheap IKEA silver tins.

IKEA Bathroom Mug

After my wedding in August, we had so many square vases left over and as my parents do not like to waste a single thing, I conveniently stumbled across one on a visit to their house one afternoon. Filled with some lima beans, this storage method is a very handy, easy and interesting feature on the bathroom counter. While I am a strong advocate against counter clutter, I have allowed this one item on my bathroom counter as it keeps the brushes separate, makes them easier to find and I use them daily.
